In recent years, the increased use of computer-generated images and movies has driven a need for digital content. I will focus on the creation of 3D geometry and propose a technique for acquiring the 3D shape of an object from several photographs of it. Ultimately, the goal is to have a lightweight acquisition method to produce models usable for further processing such as rendering, relighting and so on.
I will expose how the minimal cut of a graph can be used as a powerful optimization engine. This leads to a reconstruction algorithm that recovers accurate heightfields. This approach is then extended by considering the object surface as a collection of small patches. I will discuss the theoretical properties and consequences of such a representation. In addition, I will show that the representation can practically express a broad range of shapes, including non-spherical topology.
